Ensuring Climate Resilience : EPA, Atlantic Lithium Limited Hold Public Forum On Lithium Mining

The Ewoyaa Lithium Project is on track to become Ghana's first lithium mine and a significant global producer of hard rock lithium, a vital material in the fight against climate change.

During the construction phase, Atlantic Lithium Limited will create over 800 new jobs for Ghanaians and contribute to the proliferation of local industries and infrastructural development.

 The company also seeks to drive community development initiatives focused on sustainable socio -economic growth.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held a Public Hearing Forum (PHF) on Thursday, 27th June,2024 at Krofu in the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly in the Central Region.

It was conducted to ensure a collaborative and transparent approach to approving Atlantic Lithium’s mining bid as this project will subsequently position Ghana as a trailblazer in Africa’s climate change efforts.

The project will again secure a more prosperous future for many generations even after the Lithium mine decommissions.

It was attended by Nananom, farmers and Land Owners, government officials, staff of Mfantseman Municapal Assembly, Management and Staff of Atlantic Lithium and a section of the public.

 Mr Kieth Muller, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Atlantic Lithium Mining, in his address stated that the company is waiting for the parliamentary ratification of the Mining lease, EPA Permit, mine Operating permit and other project permits.

He noted that the company had met all the mining lease requirements including the delivery of a study report evaluating downstream Processing of lithium in Ghana, production of feldspar and its support for the local ceramic and associated industries in Ghana.

The CEO indicated that his outfit is successfully listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) to allow Ghanaians, fund managers and investors to share in the ownership of the company.

Mr Muller stressed that Atlantic Lithium limited was Progressing with Nananom on the establishment of the Community Development Fund (CDF) with one per cent of total revenue earmarked for it.

"Atlantic Lithium is committed to supporting this sustainable approach of ensuring unending community growth and prosperity" he emphasized.

 Ing Ransford Sakyi, the Deputy Executive Director of Operations at EPA, said the Atlantic Lithium’s mining operations in Ewoyaa has not commenced and are at the waiting stage of getting the environmental permit.

 "they will have to use almost two years for mine construction when the permit is given to them. The process is running smoothly. I wish the company the very best in their endeavours" he reiterated.

 The Chairman of the public hearing forum, Nana Amanfo Edu IV, the Paramount Chief of Mankessim Traditional Area (MTA), an expert in mining, advocated for a committee to be set up and tasked with monitoring the activities of the project.

On behalf of Nananom in the operational area, Nana Amanfo Edu made it clear that a large portion of funds realised from the mine should be allocated towards business development in the catchment area.

All grievances and concerns were duly addressed and plans to resolve issues raised were put in place during the public hearing forum.
