Nana Efua Eduafowa Afful and Tabitha Sharon Scott-Lutterodt, the two (2) Ghanaian Senior High School (SHS) students, have developed a Smart Lighting System Sensor (SLSS) using Light Dependent Resistance (LDR) and Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) color model Light Emmitting Diode(LED).

The sensor, designed by the duo, who are students of Mfantseman Girls and Edinaman High Schools in the Central region of Ghana respectively, is to check the lux level in a room to ensure its adequacy for the usage of light that are especially done in the night.

During the exhibition of the device, the producers said the sensor would give red indication if the light is too high, produce blue indicator when the light is too dark and turn green when the light is normal.

The LDR is to detect light levels and change resistance based on the amount of light. LDRs are used in many electronic gadgets namely security lights, cameras, street lighting systems.

LDRs resistance decreases as the light intensity increases. In the dark and at low light levels, the resistance of an LDR in high, little current can flow through it.

The main purpose of the RGB color model is for the sensing, representation, and display of images in electronic systems such as television and computers. LED lighting products produce light up to 90 per cent more efficiently than incandescent light bulbs.

An electrical current passes through a microchip, which illuminates the tiny light sources (LEDs) and the result is visible light.

It was at the closing ceremony of a seven days boot camp of MOLEX Foundation Africa’s Girls-In Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) cohort 1 at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) - Ghana.

There, a total of 60 girls across Ghana received training in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics under the MOLEX Foundation Africa’s initiative tittled SHEROES In STEM.

Participants of the initiative were equiped with the rudiments of robotics and AI, building self - confidence in STEM innovations, developing new ideas to solve societal challenges among other topics.

The programme also includes intense mentorship in-STEM and career guidance for the participants to assist them to make informed decisions about their future careers.

Different project works designed and exhibited by other students participants were distance measurement application with ultrasonic sensor, temperature control application and fire alarm application.

Dr Patrick Essien, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), MOLEX Foundation Africa, indicated that his outfit has done a lot to harness the potentials among girls and women for the socio - economic development of the country.

The cohort 1 of the SHEROES In STEM (Girls-in STEM) among other rolled-out initiatives, he emphasised, illustrates MOLEX Foundation Africa’s commitment to empower women and girls to impact society positively through innovation.

Challenges faced by Girls In STEM

Charlotte Owusu-Ansah, the Female Coordinator, MOLEX Foundation Africa, bemoaned the huge gab between males and females representations in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education across the country.

This, she noted, meant that there were less female role models in-STEM for the younger ones to look up to, so as to develop deep interest and to influence their perceptions and influence their career choices.
