A total of 272 million children and young people around the world lack access to education because of poverty, discrimination, conflict, displacement and disasters, Antonio Guterres, the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General has stated.

In his Message to mark this year’s International Day of Education, observed on 24 January each year, he stressed that Education is a human right, and a springboard to greater opportunity, dignity and peace.

International Day of Education recognizes education as a fundamental human right, a public good, and a vital tool for achieving global peace, sustainable development, and economic opportunity.
Established by the UN in 2018, it aims to promote inclusive, quality education for all and highlights the need to break cycles of poverty, inequality, and illiteracy.
The Day’s celebration aligns with the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) by acting as a catalyst to mobilize action for inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning for all by 2030.

On this International Day of Education, Mr. Guterres noted, I call on all governments, partners and donors to prioritize education in their policies, budgets and recovery efforts.
“We must close the persistent gaps in financing, access and quality that lock young people out of the future they seek and deserve” the Secretary-General urged.

As this year’s theme reminds us, he emphasized, we particularly need to listen to the voices of young people themselves, and act on their pleas for qualified teachers, relevant skills and competencies training for a changing world, and equitable access to technology.

“Together, let’s build inclusive, resilient and innovative education systems for all people” Mr. Guterres admonished.

The day is observed with global events, including 2026, where the spotlight is on the active role of youth in educational, social, and technological transformation.
