As part of efforts to support the global fight against breast cancer, the Sompa Mensah Medical Centre offered a free Breast Cancer Awareness and Screening Exercise on Monday, October 27, 2025, at its facility located at Ekyem-Aboagye Estate, Okyerekrom, in the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The exercise forms part of the Centre’s commitment to promoting preventive healthcare and creating awareness about the dangers of breast cancer among women and the general public. Rising Global Concern Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide.
Experts say the disease often develops silently without symptoms in its early stages, making early detection through regular screening critical to saving lives.
If left untreated, the disease can spread to other parts of the body such as the bones, liver, lungs, or brain, drastically reducing the chances of survival. Beyond the physical pain, breast cancer also places a huge emotional and financial burden on families and communities.
Understanding the Risk Factors
While the exact cause of breast cancer is not always known, health experts have identified several risk factors, including: Family history of breast cancer, Genetic mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, Increasing age, Obesity and poor diet, Smoking and alcohol consumption, Lack of regular exercise, Hormonal imbalances and long-term hormone replacement therapy and Early menstruation or late menopause.
Health professionals advise that being aware of these risks and undergoing regular medical screening significantly improves outcomes and can help save lives.
Centre’s Commitment to Women’s Health
According to the management of Sompa Mensah Medical Centre, the initiative is not only about offering free screening but also about educating the public, especially women, on the importance of early detection and adopting healthy lifestyle choices.
“Breast cancer is real! Early detection is paramount and goes a long way to save lives,” management emphasized. The Centre encouraged all women within and beyond the Ejisu Municipality to take advantage of the life-saving opportunity and get screened.
Take Charge of Your Health As the world marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Sompa Mensah Medical Centre is calling on individuals, families, and communities to join hands in spreading awareness and encouraging preventive action.
