Mental health is broadly described as a state of well-being where an individual recognizes their capabilities to cope with normal stresses of life, work effectively and contribute to the society.

Around one in every five working age adults has mental health problems according to the World Health Organization (WHO). October 10 every year is observe as World Mental Health Day globally.

The theme for 2024 “It’s Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace”, resonates deeply. Mental health affects productivity, relationships, and overall well-being.

This is because a major portion of an employee’s life is spent at work. Mentally sound and healthy employees are likely to be more energetic, dependable, and productive than unhealthy employees.

According to the WHO, around 60% of the total world population is in work, of which 61% work in the informal jobs.

It is estimated that 12 billion working days are lost every year due to depression and anxiety and 50% of the total societal cost of mental health conditions is incurred due to indirect costs including reduced productivity.

As part of activities to mark World Mental Health Day 2024, the Founder of Mensah Mental Health Rehabilitation Project (Ghana, UK, Sierra Leone and Netherlands), Mr Adu Gyamfi called on employers to prioritize mental health in the workplace since it can help workers flourish and reach their potentials.

He indicated that the success of any organisation rely on the collective, positive mental health of its workers which may result in increased revenue, high productivity, customer retention and health competition.

He also stressed that an employee burdened with mental health issues may be more likely to be distracted increasing the likelihood of making errors in the workplace.

For over 13 years now, Mensah Mental Health Rehabilitation Project has been engaged in activities geared towards addressing the distress and plights facing persons living with mental illness and other vulnerabilities in Ghana, UK and beyond.

The modules developed to address the needs of people living with mental illness are: Mental Health Education (MHE), Community Mental Health Support (CMHS), Community Outreach Programme (COP), Counselling Support (CS) and Apprenticeship Programme (AP).

Currently, MEMHREP is constructing a state of the art ultramodern 500-bed rehabilitation centre at Juaben in the Ashanti region of Ghana.

The centre upon completion would comprise of bedroom clusters to accommodate up to 500 patients, workshops and apprenticeship centres, conference and Chapel/Mosque, Doctors and Nurses residence.

Other facilities are Kitchen/Dining halls, Outpatient Day Clinic, waste Treatment plant, outdoor recreational facilities/Park.

MEMHREP is urgently calling on individuals, companies, religious bodies, governments and businesses to support the NGO to complete the rehabilitation centre for the aforementioned persons.
