About 375,000 DRC children are missing out on education and vulnerable to violence and recruitment by armed groups in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where about 17% of schools are closed amid the escalation of the conflict.

Deadly fighting reportedly continues in the eastern DRC, leaving a heavy civilian death toll The clashes between the M23 rebels and pro-government forces erupted on Sunday in the Nyabiondo village, about 100 km north of the North Kivu province's capital Goma, days after a nearby attack killed at least 40 civilians.

Key developments in the situation in the eastern DRC as of Monday:

A pro-government armed force, operating in the eastern DRC joined the Congo River Alliance (AFC) rebel coalition, which includes M23, an AFC spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka said on X, calling on the other armed groups to merge with the coalition.

The protestant Church of Christ in Congo, an association of 62 protestant denominations, has called on M23/AFC rebels to respect the ceasefire.

Attacks by the M23 rebels targeted several hospitals and other civilian infrastructure in the eastern DRC between March 1 and 3. DRC authorities offered a $5 million reward for help in capturing rebel leaders.

South Africa's military presence in DRC depends on African regional decisions.

The SADC and the EAC are preparing the second meeting of member country leaders this year to discuss the situation in the eastern DRC.
