Be Magnanimous With Political Opponents, Most Rev Prof Kwaku Asante Admonishes Voters

 Be magnanimous with political opponents and other groups, Most Rev Professor Kwaku Asante, the Immediate Past Chairman, the National Peace Council (NPC), has admonished political actors and voters before, during and after the December 7 polls.

This, according to him, will bring total tolerance and peace in the country's political, economic, socio - cultural and religious discourse nothing that let us guard against every peach breaching activity for the general wellbeing of residents. 

Prof Kwaku Asante indicated these on Thursday at Hwediem in the Asutifi South district in the Ahafo region at a day's consultation dialogue meeting and signing of constituency level peace pact for political parties and residents.

 He noted that political parties are established with the main aim of capturing power towards improving the living standards of the people and not an avenue to fight among ourselves as a people.

The Former NPC Chairman stated that election is about choice making on a political party to belong and group manifesto to associate in ones free - will adding that we must accept each others decision, views and affiliation.

 Prof Kwaku Asante indicated that political actors, voters and residents must be guided by their conscience, integrity, patriotism and selflessness in all political and religious activities saying that vigilance should be our watch word to ensure peace.

 He entreated all the major actors of the election including the Electoral Commission, Journalists, security officers, local and international observers to exhibit professionalism in the voting day to avoid any misunderstanding.

 Most Rev Peter Kwaku Atuahene, the Ahafo Regional Peace Council Chairman and the Catholic Bishop of Goaso, said a higher percentage of the country's population are Christians and Muslims and that they must set an exemplary leadership in peace and harmony living.

He added that though we are one people in one country, it is not possible for all of us to belong to a single political party thus the choices of our political opponents must be respected stressing that "posterity will blame our generation if we breach the peace of Ghana". 

The Regional Chairman admonished residents of Ghana to exhibit meekness, humility, respect and love for each other, integrity and patriotism in order to move the country forward as the Bible teaches according to Mathew 5:9. 

Most Rev Atuahene thanked the British High Commission in Accra, UK International Development and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) among other stakeholders for supporting the activities of the Peace Council. 

Md Jennifer Asuako, Programmes Analyst of UNDP said her outfit supported the council with funding for the dialogue meetings to enhance peace and unity in some selected election hotspots in the country including Asutifi South and Asunafo South constituencies in Ahafo region.

 She emphasised the UNDP's commitment to ensuring peace and harmony living in the world indicating that i am highly impressed with the level of cooperation and unity by political party leadership and other actors in the Ahafo region.

 The Programmes Analyst charged voters in the country to exercise their franchise in the presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7, 2024 towards the realisation of free, fair and transparent polls.

All the political parties at the dialogue meeting declared their unflinching commitment to peace before, during and after the elections and later proceeded to sign the peace pact. 

The dialogue meeting was attended by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Electoral Commission, Peace Council, the Clergy, Asutifi North and Asunafo North Assemblies, traditional authorities, Police, Persons With Disability, Women groups, political parties among others.
