Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud emphasized dialogue and cooperation during talks with South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar, calling South Sudan’s stability critical to regional peace.

He also reaffirmed regional support for resolving the crisis peacefully. Tensions flared after Kiir’s forces arrested opposition-linked ministers and military officials, following clashes with the White Army militia, largely composed of Machar's Nuer ethnic group.

The situation further deteriorated last Friday, when a UN helicopter evacuating troops near Nasir was shot down, killing a crew member and soldiers.

AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat demanded an immediate halt to hostilities in South Sudan, urging authorities to hold perpetrators accountable.

He stressed the need for parties to uphold the ceasefire, engage in dialogue, and reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to implementing the Revitalized Peace.
