The Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Professor Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, on Friday 14 March, 2025 met with the Overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sherigah II, to discuss the recent death of a level 400 student at the Gambaga College of Education.

Salifu Ibrahim, 31, the student, was tragically shot and killed by unknown gunmen outside the school campus on Wednesday (12 March 2025), after watching a football game and was returning to his private hostel.

Another student, Amoah Seth Junior, 26, was also injured in the incident and is currently receiving treatment at the Nalerigu Baptist Medical Centre (BMC).

The Director-General's visit was a courtesy call to seek permission from the Nayiri before visiting the Gambaga College of Education to meet with the staff and students regarding the incident.

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, had delegated Professor Jinapor to handle the matter. During his visit, the Director-General also took the opportunity to visit the injured student at the hospital, BMC.

Speaking at the Nayiri Palace, Professor Ahmed Jinapor stated that the minister of education after hearing the unfortunate incident delegated him and some members of the commission to meet the Nayiri before meeting the staff of the school and the student body.

"We heard of some unfortunate incident here at the Gambaga College of Education where a student loss his life and another person we are told is in critical condition"

"So the Honourable Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, dispatch me and some colleagues of mine from the GTEC at the Instance of his Excellency the President for us to come and ascertain what happened and report back for them to take action"

He told the traditional leader that as custom and tradition demand, they could not visit the community without paying a courtesy call on the Overlord of the kingdom.

The Director-General said the commission and the Ministry of Education are worried about the incident since it involves students, and that they will do everything possible to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted.

Prof Jinapor emphasized that had the incident happened to Walewale, Nalerigu, or the North East communities, we would not have the expertise to speak to it, we would have left it with the security agencies, but once it has to do with the disruption and interruption of academic work, then I think it becomes necessary for us to step in.
