The Center for Environment, Natural Resources and Sustainability (CENS) Africa, a not - for - profit organization, has enjoined Political Parties in Ghana to include stringent environmental measures in their campaign activities.

In a press release on May 11, 2024 in Accra on environmental concerns amidst political activities, CENS Africa said it has observed that political campaigns and electioneering activities are gaining momentum ahead of the 2024 general elections.

It stated that these activities, throughout history, have involved environmentally insensitive choices and actions such as noise and air pollution, poor waste management and greenhouse emission.

CENS Africa said this was through intense human activities, high energy consumption, use of synthetic and non - biodegradable materials for posters and billboards and many others.

The issues, according to Clement Abaidoo, Executive Director, CENS Africa, affect vulnerable groups, public health, eco - system resilience and other environmental receptors.

It added that with the current environmental challenges the country is facing, the center expect office seekers not to compound the existing problems, but to institute stringent environmental measures in their campaign activities in the build - up to December elections.

The Executive Director indicated that public office seekers must be mindful of messages that may incite negative environmental practices.

CENS Africa recommended that leaders make conscious efforts to control noise and air pollution, consumption activities, use biodegradable and green materials for posters and advertisements, and utilise pro - green platforms such as online media.

Mr Abaidoo emphasised that CENS Africa and all our allies will also be monitoring political activities, messages and environmental footprints across cities and communities.

"We count on your cooperation to make Ghana an environmentally safe country" the release stated.

CENS Africa implores media houses, political parties, Presidential Candidates (PCs), parliamentary candidates, Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Eco - Conscious Citizens, Environment oriented Non - Governmental Organisations (NGOs) among other stakeholders to intervene.
