The Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) has added its voice to the growing list of religious groups calling on President Nana Akufo-Addo to assent to the anti - Lesbianism, Gayism, Bisexualism, Transgender, Queer and Others (LGBTQ+) bill into law before he leaves office.

The bill, which has been a topic of controversy, aims to introduce wide-ranging restrictions on LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana. According to reports, the church's leadership has expressed its support for the bill, citing the need to protect traditional Ghanaian values and family structures.

The church believes that the bill is necessary to promote the moral and social well-being of Ghanaians, and that it aligns with the country's cultural and religious heritage.

The anti-LGBTQ+ bill has been making its way through the Ghanaian parliament, with the most recent version passing on February 28, 2024. The bill proposes prison sentences for individuals who identify as LGBTQ+, as well as for those who promote LGBTQ+ activities.

It has been met with significant opposition from human rights groups and the international community, who argue that it violates basic human rights and freedoms. Despite the backlash, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana is joining other religious groups in supporting the bill.

The church's stance is that the bill is necessary to protect the country's moral fabric and to promote a sense of decency and respect for traditional values.

The president's decision on whether to sign the bill into law is still pending, and it is unclear what he will ultimately decide. However, with the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and other religious groups weighing in, it is clear that this is an issue that is deeply important to many Ghanaians.

The debate over the anti-LGBTQ+ bill has sparked a national conversation about the role of religion and tradition in shaping the country's laws and policies.

While some argue that the bill is necessary to protect Ghana's cultural heritage, others believe that it is a violation of human rights and that it will only serve to further marginalize the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana.

As the president considers his next move, it is clear that the fate of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill will have significant implications for the country's human rights record and its reputation on the international stage.
