Report by Ayama Akatile, Nkoranza

The chiefs and people of Donkro Nkwanta, Akuma, Nkwabeng and Bredi in the Bono East region, have entreated the Inspector - General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akufu Dampare, to return police officers to post.

Officers of the police service in these rural areas who were ordered to vacate their duty post since May 2022, due to the outbreak of violence in the affected communities, are yet to return.

A leading member of the Youth group, Albert Donkor was allegedly murdered while in the custody of the police in Nkoranza on April 2022.

The issue infuriated the youth, who reacted with a massive demonstration, resulted in a violent clash between them and the police.

The high hierarchy of the Ghana Police Service (GPS), as a result withdrew all the officers from Nkoranza and its nearby communities including these affected ones.

According to residents of these communities, the absence of police have paved way for criminal activities to rise, thereby putting the their lives and properties at risk.

The Assembly Member for Donkro Nkwanta Electoral Area, Uthan Paul, in an interview with asempadawuro.com, disclosed that people of Bredi spend about GH¢30 to GH¢40 as cost of transport to lodge complain at Nkoranza.

He expressed his disappointment in the police administration in the country for depriving the people of the affected communities their fundamental human rights saying "the earlier the officers return, the better for us all".

Mr Uthan Paul appealed to the Bono East Regional Minister, Kwesi Adu Gyan, Nkoranza Municipal Chief executive (MCE), Daniel Yaw Owiredu and the Member of parliament (MP) of the area, Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyakum, to intervene the situation.

The Assembly Member bemoaned how police officers have return to duty at Nkoranza, the venue of the violent clash but these affected communities which were not part of the act, are now facing it's repelling effect.
