Suicide is on the rise amongst the youth in the world. Suicides and suicide attempts have a ripple effect that impart not only individuals but also families, communities and societies.

Across the world, World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), is celebrated annually on 10th September. It is organised by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and recognised by the World Health Organisation.

The event represent a global commitment to focus attention on suicide prevention. The theme for 2023 was: Creating Hope Through Action.

Mensah Mental Health Rehabilitation Project (MEMHREP), partnered Africa Mental Health Association logistically to observe the occasion in Ghana.

Commemorating the event, the CEO of MEMHREP , Mr Adu - Gyamfi called for a holistic and systematic approach to addressing this urgent public health issue.

He said the factors leading to suicides are visible and can be managed, therefore the need for persons experiencing depression and anxiety to seek early medical solution.

He also asked the youth to desist from the abuse of drugs and concentrate on their studies. He said the doors of MEMHREP are opened to all needing psychological and emotional help.

The country Director of Africa Mental Health Association, Mr David Nabori was full of praise for MEMHREP’s dedication and zeal in addressing the plights of persons living with mental illness and other vulnerabilities.

He was particularly fond of the NGO’s innovative social intervention programme christened “FEE”.

This programme is designed to locate persons living with mental illness and living on the streets of Ghana. When found, they are fed, educated and employed.

He therefore called for support for the NGO so they are able to fulfil their vision of ridding the streets of persons with mental illness.
