Churches and other Faith - Based Organizations (FBO) must earmark a special funds solely for the welfare of Persons With Disabilities (PWDS), Most Rev Peter Kwaku Atuahene, the Catholic Bishop of Goaso Diocese, has admonished.

That, according to him, would empower PWDs to contribute their quota to the development of society without fear and intimidation.

He noted that about 95 per cent of PWDs in the country depend on the benevolence of individuals for their daily 'bread', health care, movement among other social, economic, psychologically and spiritual needs.

The Bishop implored that portion of the fund could be used to cater for health and medication, accommodation, feeding, payment of school fees, apprenticeship fees, capital for trading and other economic activities among others.

Most Rev Kwaku Atuahene stated these at Goaso on Monday 4th December, 2023 at the Ahafo Regional celebration of this year's International Day for Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), which is observed every 3rd December.

The Day was held on the theme, "united in action to rescue and achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with and by persons with disabilities".

It was attended by the clergy, media practitioners, government officials, Asunafo North Municipal Assembly, NGOs, Ahafo Regional Co - ordinating Council (RCC), officers of the police service, the Department of Social Welfare and a section of the public.

Over a decade, the disability movement and civil society organizations in the disability sector under the coordination of Ghana Federation of Disability Organization (GFD) have been observing the Day in Ghana.

The Day has always been a rallying occasion for issues surrounding disability to take center stage in national discourse.

Most Rev Kwaku Atuahene, who chaired the durbar, entreated stakeholders including the media, NCCE to stage a daily advocate and campaign in support of PWDs, and urged duty bearers to strictly protect common funds earmarked for PWDs.

The Bishop admonished parents and guardians not to hide their children with any form of disability but bring them out to harness their hidden talents and gifts, for the socio - economic growth of the country.

" Disability is not a disease, neither it is a curse or misfortune. It is part of life. All of us can become persons with disabilities anytime, any day. The more we champion the course of PWDs, a great service it would be for God and country" he said.

Felicia Serwaa, Ahafo Regional President of GFD, in her remarks, indicated that the Day is observed annually to create awareness on the need for legislators to make laws to favour the movement, care support, against stigmatization and societal neglect of PWDs.

She lauded the leading role of some Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDCEs) to ensure the construction of disability - friendly edifices especially in public places, saying "other institutions must emulate".

The Regional President solicited the support of key stakeholders including religious organizations, NGOs, donor institutions, individuals and groups, philanthropists and traditional authorities for the welfare of PWDs in the Ahafo region.

She expressed gratitude to all and sundry for supporting the activities of PWDs in the region saying " together we can make our world lovely, peaceful and unique abode for living".
