Writer Prince Akyereko is advocating that Ghana's basics for negotiating the lithium deal should be 40 per cent or above.

We are in 2023 and I do not see why Ghana should continue signing bad natural resources deal like the one with the Lithium.

 By the way what is the reason behind the rush to give our resources to foreign entities while our people continue to live in abject poverty?

It is better to leave the lithium untouched than to mine them without our people benefiting from it. Our basics for negotiating should be 40 per cent or more. Otherwise, no deal at all.

 BACKGROUND

 Ghana has given a 15 - year lithium mining

license to Atlantic Lithium, which is estimated at 35.3 metric tons a value of over $4.86 billion over the life span of the mine.

The project comprises deposits in Ewoyaa, Abonko, and Kaampakrom in the central region of Ghana, approximately 100 kilometers south west of Accra.

 It would produce about 300,000 tons of lithium yearly, with Ghana country aiming to play a key role in the multi billion - dollar industry.

The 15 - year lease to Barari DV Ghana Limited, a unit of the Sydney - based company, enables it to commence the construction of a lithium mine at a 42.6 kilometre site at Ewoyaa.

 It comes after almost six years of exploration that has discovered high grade lithium in commercial quantities, according to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR).

 The execution of the construction will give Ghana 10 per cent share in the form of royalties, says Samuel Jinapor, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources.
