The Ghana Country - Director for Amnesty International, Genevieve Partington, has urged the government to support or subsidize sanitary products and remove taxes on these essential items.

She made this call during the launch of an art exhibition by the organization, which showcased the works of ten artists depicting the challenges and experiences of young girls during menstruation.

Amnesty International Ghana launched the MenstruART Competition in May this year to utilize art and self - expression as powerful tools to challenge societal norms surrounding menstruation.

It was also to advocate for improved menstrual health and hygiene management, under this year’s theme, “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyGhana” to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child, under the theme “Girl’s Vision for the Future".

It focused on menstrual hygiene, addressing period poverty, and promoting a more period - friendly Ghana.

In terms of advocacy, Partington mentioned ongoing efforts, including a bill in parliament spearheaded by Lawyer Sosu, MP of Medina, and other MPs which aims to remove taxes from sanitary pads and promote domestic production.

Angelina Ampofo Asomani was adjudged the winner and was rewarded with a cash prize of ten thousand Ghana cedis and souvenirs.

She expressed her gratitude to the organizers for the opportunity.
