The Coalition for Maternal Health and Citizens Empowerment (CMCE), a non - profit organization and ActionAid Ghana have donated an Adolescent Reproductive Health Centre (ARHC) to Obengkrom community on Friday July 26, 2024 in the Asutifi North district.
To be manned by health professionals assigned by the district health directorate, and utility bills taken care by the community, the centre is aimed at providing accurate information on reproductive health to adolescents in the area.
The centre is furnished with television sets connected with many education oriented channels and programmes, weighing scales, thermometers, gaming facilities including ludu, drought, cards and other equipment.
Mr Mahama Salam, the Executive Director, Coalition for Maternal Health and Citizens Empowerment, in his remarks said his outfit was committed to Girl - child empowerment and youth employment for the socio - economic growth of society.
He noted that CMCE had earlier had stakeholders engagements on improving the complete health and transformation of adolescents in the area with teachers, parents and community folks adding that let us all collaborate to nurture our young ones.
The Executive Director indicated that large number of adolescents in Africa are fed with misinformation on their reproductive health which caused detrimental effects on their physical, emotional and cognitive upbringing.
Mr Salam stressed that there was the urgent need to donate the center to provide credible information on adolescent reproductive health to boys and girls in the enclave to enhance their overall wellbeing.
"Personal development of every young person needs security, peace of mind, protection of fundamental human rights and effective education. Transitional stages from childhood to adulthood is also key" he stated.
The Programmes Manager, ActionAid Ghana for Bono, Ahafo and Bono East, Afram Kwame implored health officials posted to the center to willingly provide accurate information on signs of adolescents including its associated physical, emotional and mental changes to students devoid insults and embarrassment.
He added that today's children are abreast with sexual information acquired through social media, by their friends and other unreliable sources and that the accurate information from professionals given to adolescents the better.
Mr Afram noted that if the right reproductive health information is not known by adolescents, most females will get pregnant, and males can impregnate other girls, contract sexually transmitted diseases and also get addicted to hard drugs and other social vices.
The Programmes Manager urged health professionals assigned to the facility to discharge their duty with fun, integrity, confidentiality, respect and love saying that "together we can raise well nurtured adolescents to become transformed adults".
Elizabeth Azumah Atinga, Asutifi North District Guidance and Counselling, and Girl - Child Coordinator commended CMCE and ActionAid for the establishment of the center saying that pre - marital sex, teenage pregnancies, drug and child abuses will reduce.
She encouraged girls in the district to desist from allowing men to lure them for sexual escapes with candies, fast foods, money, gifts and other sweet words and promises adding that your lives will be in danger.
The Girl - Child Coordinator implored parents, teachers and other community members to support the grooming of girls and boys in the enclave including household chores, good manners and morals, humility and respect.
Juliana Mensah Amankwaa, Asutifi North District Public Health Officer stated that though the center is earmarked for 10 to 24 years olds, parents, teachers and community members can also seek reproductive health information from the center.
She said patrons of the center will get knowledge in contraceptives usage, keeping personal hygiene, putting on sanitary pad, sexually transmitted diseases, effective counselling sessions, signs in adolescent stages, preventing unwanted pregnancies and others.
The Public Health Official promised to keep the center confidential and entreated the adolescents to feel at home and use the reproductive health information center to the full benefit of their future.
"confide in the health professionals assigned to the facility with cases of child abuses, threats, sexual harassments, child marriages and unwanted pregnancies. We are here to help you" she emphasised.
The School Management Committee (SMC) Chairman and a community leader, Maxwell Boadi on behalf of the chief and people of Obengkrom thanked CMCE and ActionAid for their kind gesture pledging that the center will be well kept.
