Scenic Design: The Missing Piece in Ghana’s Film and Theatre Industry

Ghana’s film and theatre industries are on the brink of a creative revolution, and the key to unlocking this transformation lies in scenic design.

While Hollywood has long embraced the power of immersive set design to elevate storytelling, Ghana is yet to fully harness this artistic goldmine.

From films like Black Panther to stage productions like The Lion King, scenic design plays a crucial role in building captivating worlds that resonate deeply with audiences.

Prince Kojo-Hilton, one of Africa’s most celebrated scenic designers, is leading the charge to bridge this gap.

With experience working as a scenic designer and painter on the Hollywood sci-fi movie Sense 8 shot in Nairobi, and numerous successful productions at Ghana’s National Theatre, Kojo-Hilton understands the transformative power of set design.

His latest initiative, Hilwood Studio’s Scenic Design Masterclass, in partnership with YMCA, promises to unlock the next generation of creative minds.

Running from February 17th to 22nd, 2025, at YMCA premises, this week-long masterclass will equip participants with hands-on skills in set construction, visual storytelling, and world-building techniques inspired by Hollywood.

The masterclass will culminate in a cocktail open exhibition on February 22nd, 2025, showcasing participants’ works.

The event invites individuals, institutions, media, and all lovers of the creative arts to witness the fusion of Ghanaian talent and international design expertise.

This initiative is more than just a class—it’s a call to action for Ghana’s film and theatre industries to embrace scenic design as an essential tool for visual storytelling.

By empowering local artists and designers, Ghana can produce films and stage productions that captivate global audiences, placing African stories at the forefront of world entertainment.

Join the movement. Be part of the transformation.
