UN INTER - AGENCY GROUP EXTENDS HUMANITARIAN SUPPORT TO AFFECTED FLOOD VICTIMS IN VOLTA REGION
By Emmanuel ADU GYAMFI (Odopa2@gmail.com) A United Nations (UN) Inter - Agency Group on Friday provided humanitarian support to residents of the affected districts by the spillage of the Akosombo dam in the Volta region. The team has earlier paid a courtesy call on Hon Eric Nana Agyemang - Prempeh, the Director - General, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in Accra. Led by the Ghana - Resident Coordinator, Charles Abani, the delegation visited the North Tongu District, one of the nine affected districts to commiserate with flood - affected communities in the district. The team made a presentation of bottled water, dignity kits, water purification tablets, water storage tanks, and tents. This is in addition to tents and medical supplies already presented to support ongoing relief efforts in the affected districts. As part of their assistance, the UN Inter - Agency Working Group on Emergencies has deployed teams to conduct rapid assessments of about 60 safe havens (temporary shelters) in the three most affected Tongu districts - North, South, and Central. They are also mobilizing and expected to provide psycho - social support to families affected by the floods. As the chair of the International Association of World Group Emergencies (IAWGE), the WFP has initiated registration to facilitate cash transfers to affected households in the safe havens. This would greatly enable residents in the affected districts to meet the food, nutrition, and other essential needs. The WFP has initiated this process pending registration of Individual Displayed Persons (IDPs) in all the affected districts. Members of the delegation included, Charles Abani - United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator, Ghana, and Barbara Clemens - Representative and Country Director, World Food Program (WFP). The rest were Diallo Ndiaye - WFP Chief of Mission - Ghana, Togo and Benin, Fiachra McAsey - United Nations International, Cultural and Education Fund (UNICEF) Deputy Representative in Ghana, Sally - Ann Ohene - World Health Organization (WHO). Hon Eric Nana Agyemang -Prempeh, Director - General, NADMO, on behalf of the people of Ghana, expressed gratitude to the working team for their humanitarian support to victims affected by the spillage of the Akosombo dam. In a related development, a delegation from Ghana Gas who presented relief items to victims affected by the floods in Bator in the North Tongu District in the Volta region, also paid a visit to the Director - General of NADMO. Later, Nana Agyemang - Prempeh visited various safe havens in the Central Tongu and Ada East districts.
