Galamsey : Youth of Ahafo Techimantia strongly reject plans to commence community mining in the enclave

Techimantia Youth for Development (TYD), a community - based association in the Tano South Municipality, has issue a stern warning to individuals and groups who have targeted the community and its environs for illegal mining.

In a statement released to the press on Monday January 8, 2024 at Techimantia, in the Ahafo region, signed by Danso Darko, the General Secretary of the group, said recalcitrant illegal miners come to the area in their own peril.

Mr Darko disclosed that the attention of the patrons, executives and entire membership of TYD have been drawn to an ongoing consultation by an individual or groups waiting public support to commence community mining in Techimantia.

The statement further said, "we would like to officially register our displeasure on such development by stating clearly that the people of Techimantia do not want any form of mining in our farming community".

It noted that the Development Association has consulted Assembly Members, traditional authorities, Christian Council, Zongo Community and other key stakeholder institutions on the subject, and fortunately, their response has been "no to any form of mining".

The General Secretary of TYD indicated that the Association have assessed the positive and negative effects of mining compared with the enormous and continuous benefits of agriculture.

He added that the group have concluded that they cannot stand at the test of mining menace and its dire effects including the destruction of arable land, pollution of water bodies, increased social vices, prostitution among others.

The Techimantia Youth for Development, through the statement, issued a caution to anyone or group who have decided to undertake any kind of mining activity in the enclave to stop at their own good and safety.
