News Desk Report
We, the staff of the New Times Corporation (NTC) bring you our warmest greetings and wish you a prosperous Happy New Year.
We are, however, not in the best of moods to kick start 2024. Without much ado, we wish to remind the National Media Commission (NMC) – the appointing authority – that the four - year tenure of the New Times Corporation Managing Director, Mr Martin Adu - Owusu had expired on December 31, 2023.
Today is the 15th day of January 2024 – more than two weeks after the expiration of the contract, and we have not heard any action from the Commission in that regard.
It is no news that things are going awfully in the Corporation – with absolutely no hint of salvation in sight. The staff have been forced to tighten their belt for years in the hope that things would improve with time.
Sadly, the long awaited hope has rather turned into a long pain and anguish for the staff. Regrettably, we are moving from bad to worse by the day – the MD evidently lacking the proficiency, the drive and acumen to turn the situation around.
There is a deep - seated anger and frustration brewing among staff – a situation caused by the unsustainability of our news products, the controversial selling of our printing machine, selling almost all our vehicles, leasing more than half of the Corporation’s property (plot) to an investor,
non -payment of staff salaries, non -payment of medicals, non - payment of SSNIT contributions and tier 2, non - payment of our Provident Fund, mismanagement of CTP plates and the printing of our papers in a private media house at a higher cost, without contract – among others.
As we speak now, staff December salary is still in arrears, yet the MD has been given over Twenty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC20,000) from the Corporation’s accounts to buy an engine for his personal Toyota Highlander,
this January 2024. Gratuities of retired and resigned staff have also not been paid. Indeed we have suffered enough from Mr Adu - Owusu’s term of office.
His managerial style has taken many of our staff to their early graves, and skilled staff resigned. We do not want to lose any more staff this year.
As a stakeholder, we are appealing to the NMC and SIGA, to act swiftly before it is too late. We believe Year 2024 is a promising one. It is also a year of a major election in Ghana – and we would not want to do anything to disturb the peace our beloved country is experiencing now.
We are wallowing in abject poverty and our news products are equally struggling to be at the news stands. We are asking the Commission and SIGA to immediately stop Mr Adu -Owusu from coming to the office to present himself as the MD of the Corporation – a position that expired on December 31, 2023.
We are on this note requesting you (NMC) to immediately intervene before anything unsavoury happens since the staff are in a combative mood at the moment.
Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely yours,
Diana Bosuh – Chairperson PMSU
