Robust, fruitful policy regarding Ghana's mineral resources is key : Ambassador Kwame Tenkorang writes
Lithium is a valuable natural resource

Sages say that when you leash an animal for a long time the animal will remain still and refuse to move away even when it is unleashed.

That conditioning is the result of the mental attitude developed from the period of incarceration. Its effect is as deadly as when the whip was being applied to keep the object in line.

Related to humans, especially in reference to colonialism, slavery and other forms of subjugation of human, this phenomenon breeds what wise men call MENTAL SLAVERY.

Bob Marley of Jamaica, in his masterpiece of a song, REDEMPTION SONG, calls on Africa and the entire black race to "emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our mind" In short, it is your mental attitude or perception that can help start your journey to freedom.

If you don't decide to take this first step, forget it, you won't go anywhere. What is the relationship with the title of this article? History teaches us that the first gold 'agreement' was a private lease of 'mines' to some Europeans by some three coastal men for a hundred pounds.

The rest is where we are today. It has sunk so much in our mind that we believe the only way to use our natural resources is to lease them out to an 'obroni' for peanuts in return.

In this case, have we done better than our forebears of the 18th and 19th centuries who had no basis for comparison? Safe for General Acheampong who had a more progressive mindset from others regarding ownership of our resources, we have swallowed line, hook and sinker this fallacy that we can only benefit from leasing for royalties.

The obroni can have all and handout 5% in royalties to us. The conditioning! Even when the colonialists and slave masters have left our shores, we have not found it necessary to investigate what OPTIONS are, or could be, available to us.

So after 66 years of independence, when presumably, the leash was removed, we still look to Guggisberg for solutions. What mental slavery has done and continues to do to us! Since we're so prayerful I can only say "Lord have mercy".

For what it's worth, let me suggest that from today we, as represented by government, should decide a policy regarding Ghana's mineral resources.

At worst, the present leasing agreements for royalties whose output we know should be banned from our books. No more.

If we must open any mineral/natural resources up for exploration, we must be guided by new perspectives which are available today.

Without going into details, may I simply mention joint venture arrangements, or service arrangements.

Others are doing that; why can't we? We need a more progressive policy and mindset. Let us free our mind and other doors will open for us!
