The Ghana Elections Project (TGEP) has observed with dismay the Electoral Commission's nonchalant attitude toward the call for an audit of the voter’s register.
The dismissive posture of the Commission in the face of such a call does not befit an independent constitutional body mandated to conduct public elections in a democratic country such as Ghana.
The Ghana Elections Project wants to remind the Electoral Commission that its role under the constitutional framework is akin to that of an independent umpire.
In a release to the press, Lawrence Lamptey, the Convenor of TGEP said any attitude or utterance that portrays the Commission as an interested and biased institution should be disregarded.
According to the recent Afro barometer survey, the Commission, as it is presently constituted, is already least trusted.
Therefore, he stated, the Ghana Elections Project would not expect behaviours that threaten the safety of Ghanaians and cast doubt on the credibility of the December 7 General Election results.
"The Electoral Commission must build public confidence in its work before and after the December 7 General Elections, and it should start with the voter’s register" Mr Lamptey cautions.
The Convenor noted that his outfit is calling on the Electoral Commission to yield to calls for an independent audit of the voters register to ensure that no voter is disenfranchised in the upcoming election.
"in the 2020 general elections, residents of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL) were denied the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights due to the EC's disregard for counsel" he bemoaned.
The Ghana Elections Project is a pro - democracy non - profit organisation with the focus on re -engineering a deliberative process for effective popular participation in Ghana’s democracy.
It achieve that through research and the organisation of stakeholder events which bring together both experts and the general public to discuss some major issues affecting the country and the world.
